On February 1, 2007, General Jones completed 40 years of active duty service in the Marine Corps. His career was marked by a variety of assignments to include service as Marine Corps Senate Liaison Officer, operational command at all levels, to include a combat tour in Vietnam, and command roles in humanitarian operations in Northern Iraq and Bosnia Herzegovina. His two final assignments called upon him to serve successively as 32 nd Commandant of the Marine Corps, followed by a tour of duty as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, and Commander, U.S. European Command. He is a decorated combat veteran who has worked closely with government, business, and civic leaders in an effort to protect and advance U.S. and allied interests around the world. During his final assignment, he helped the North Atlantic Treaty Organization organize discussions on energy issues and the defense of critical infrastructures, and he worked to advocate energy security as a core part of NATO’s future missions.

His most notable operational assignments include tours as Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment; the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (SOC); and the 2nd Marine Division. In 1997, he was asked to serve as Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense before being designated as Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1999.

General Jones was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree (1966) and an Honorary Doctorate of Letters (2002) from Georgetown University. He is a 1985 graduate of the National War College in Washington, DC. His personal decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (four awards), the Silver Star Medal, the Legion of Merit (five awards), the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V”, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Following his assignment to NATO, he was awarded several international decorations from member nations of the alliance and the NATO Meritorious Service Medal.

Today, General James L. Jones is President and CEO of the Institute for Energy of the United States Chamber of Commerce.

He is responsible for executing the Institute’s strategic mission of uniting energy consumers and producers in a common cause—to increase the variety of the U.S. energy supply and associated infrastructures; to advance international cooperation on energy issues; to protect national energy security; to promote better understanding of the changes to the global climate and its effects on the environment; and to expand economic opportunities wherever possible.
