M.I.C. PRESS ROOM

Introducing

The Michael S. Ansari Africa Center
Renewing the Atlantic Community for Global Challenges

Michael S. Ansari

“The partnership between Africa and outside participating nations and entities can work when African voices are heard on equal par with those of the Europeans and Americans and when it is grounded on mutual respect, trust, clear expectations, broadened relationships, business investment and public support which are the goals of the Ansari Africa Center.”

The vision of Michael Ansari has made possible the creation of the Michael S. Ansari Africa Center. An industrialist and a philanthropist, Mr. Ansari also serves on the Atlantic Council’s board of directors.

These worlds of defense and development are inextricably linked. They’re not the same thing; they’re very different. But they’re linked and we need to see them as part of the same picture. They’re both essential if we really want to build a world that’s more secure, more prosperous and more just. And it’s more important than ever that we see those connections, especially in asymmetrical conflicts.

Liberia is proud to be part of the trans-Atlantic community, which honors those sacrifices by freedom-loving peoples all over the world. The people of Liberia-and the people of Africa-know that it is in partnership with friends and allies who share these important values that we will continue to work until all of our children enjoy the blessings of peace and prosperity, of freedom and democracy.

I’m here to share a few thoughts about our current efforts at entrenching accountability in our country and also benefit from your deep insights and experience in this very important matter. I want to begin by extending my sincere thanks to the Atlantic Council for the warm welcome and very specially congratulate you for what you are doing.

President of Nigeria

The Michael S. Ansari Africa Center of the Atlantic Council, launched in April 2010, provides a forum for strategic analysis and policy recommendations for Africa. The Ansari Africa Center works under the broad themes of security and prosperity, emphasizing African perspectives.

Africa’s future has crucial implications for the transatlantic community. The existence of fragmented political systems, together with economic challenges, are compounded by instability, climate change, and disease. To deal with these issues, there is a need for a comprehensive approach and closer cooperation and dialogue.

Practical, results oriented programs are developed in close consultation with experts and leaders from Africa, Europe, and the United States, who come from the private and public sectors, think tanks and universities, and international and non-governmental organizations. The Ansari Africa Center aims to promote stability and prosperity in Africa, to work with Africans to build consensus on the appropriate international security structures in support of African development, and to identify coordination mechanisms that can successfully deal with energy, health, education, food security, and employment challenges.

The Ansari Africa Center aims to bring a clear vision to support African national efforts in creating security and prosperity for their people. The Center will bring together African, European, and U.S. government, business, and NGO leaders with representatives of the African Union, United Nations, European Union, and NATO under one roof to share ideas and strategies for better integrated policies.

With a broad network of African, European and U.S. experts, the Ansari Africa Center will hold strategy sessions designed to give policymakers additional perspectives on key issues on the continent. The Center will bring together high level U.S. government officials working on current Africa policy issues, from counter terrorism to peacekeeping, from Sudan to Somalia, and from disaster management to foreign investment.

Africa possesses the expertise and wisdom to not only meet its security and economic challenges but to build prosperous, secure and just societies. With this in mind, the Ansari Africa Center will provide a platform for outstanding African entrepreneurs, policymakers, scholars and activists to critically engage their U.S. counterparts.

In keeping with the Atlantic Council’s long standing commitment to develop the next generation of leaders, the Ansari Africa Center will also bring together young African, American and European professionals interested in African issues.

It has been Michael Ansari’s vision, along with our former chairman of this board who has taken on another assignment not insignificant as national security advisor to President Obama. It was General Jones and Michael Ansari who had the vision and the capability of putting all of that together and producing something that, we believe, for both our continents and our countries and the world, can be a framework, a working model for other relationships around the globe.

Chairman
Atlantic Council

Founded 50 years ago, the Atlantic Council’s mission is that of renewing the Atlantic community for global challenges. We renew the community and address the most pressing issues in the world with global partners acting in common purpose. The issues range from energy security to Afghanistan, from global financial stability to the multiple challenges of Africa. It is in that context that we are launching today our Michael S. Ansari Center.
